Garage sales are a lot of fun but also a lot of work. Knowing how to set up your items will help you to make more money than if you just throw everything out on a table.
On the storage building auction page we talked about throwing a garage sale to get rid of the items you don't want to sell online or keep. Auction-know-how not only teaches you how to bid and buy at auctions but how to make money on what you bought.

Okay, now that you know what you need, lets get started.
The number one rule for a more successful garage sale is....don't put out dirty items. I know that everything can't be shiny clean, but at least brush things off or wipe them down. Your customers don't like picking up dirty things.
When I put on a garage sale I make sure I have plenty of tables so people don't have to bend down on the ground to search through boxes. If you don't have enough, borrow some. Also you can fill up the tables you have then bring out other items as things get sold. Two chairs and a door taken off its hinges also makes a good table.
Next place your items by category. Put all brass items together, crystal, glass, wood, and so on. This makes items more attractive and easier for collectors to find.
Clothes line hung between trees makes a great place to display hats, purses and clothes. If you can't do this, place an old sheet or tarp down on the ground and put the purses and shoes on that. People don't seem to mind the shoes and purses being on the ground. If you can't hang clothes, then fold them for display.
Have a card table for yourself, to check people out on, and a money box or fanny pack for your bank. I prefer the fanny pack because you don't have to worry about someone picking up the money box while you are helping someone else.
Save all your plastic sacks from the grocery store to use for easier carrying. Your garage sale customers will like that.
Set up as much as possible the night before the sale. You can make your signs and blow up balloons to attach to them. The balloons make your signs stand out to people driving by. Also don't forget to put your ad in a penny saver type paper in your area.
Try to price every item. If you have a lot of $.25 items, place them all in a box and just mark the price on the box. Only price items in .25 cent increments. Never price anything for a dime or 15 cents. Making change in quarters is much easier. Be sure you have at least $75.00 in your money bank with a lot of it being ones and fives and at least one roll of quarters.
Be ready by 7:00 am because I guarantee you that early birds will show up. Even if you listed in the paper "early birds will be shot", they will be there!
Follow these guidelines and you will have a successful garage sale every time. Now get out there and auction and sell!
