Antique Auctions

Antique auctions are exciting to buy and sell at. No matter what the going fad is, this genre will always be popular. Attend some auctions before you get started so you can see what kind of things people are buying and selling. If live auctions are not your thing, look online. You will find anything from antique book dealers, price guides, to engagement rings. When buying at antique auctions if you can find out the personal history behind the piece it's better. Sometimes a family member will be selling and can tell you how great great grandma was given the piece by her rebel lover and other such tales! How Old Is Old Enough?
A long time ago it was pieces from the early 1800's but now the legal definition is 100 years old. Some dealers will say 50 years old. For me,at antique auctions,I go with 100 years since I'm over fifty and don't want to be called an antique! To be safe I'd anything under 100 years old - vintage. Also, don't mistake collectables with antiques, even if they are old. However, mixing some collectables in with your old items is still a good idea.
How To Tell The Age
Now we are getting to the tricky part. If you have not previously worked with or been around antiques you will need to do some research. There are many online sites and forums on antiques but you still need to read books about them also.
Don't Spend A Fortune On Books
Go to Amazon to look for books first. You can get new and used books on there for a fraction of the cost. See the link below for an example

For instance, if you are into antique furniture you should expect to see signs of age on an older piece. Maybe some black marks or nicks and cuts. On antique furniture the hardward should also show signs of age. You need to know if the piece has been refinished. This can be told by turning it upside down if the piece is small enough. Are there drips or runs of stain or varnish? Don't let all this scare you out of becoming an expert on antiques and making money buying and selling them. All you need is a helping hand and some study on your part. A great way to get a helping hand is to have a mentor. Mentors hold your hand, teach you, and help you make money. If you don't want to go into partnership with someone there is another way to be mentored and that is through an ebook that I would recommend to anyone getting started. It's called How To Buy And Sell Antiques For Fun And Profit by Fred Reynol. Just click on the link below to read all about it! Also you will need to know if the antiques you buy should be refinished or restored. You can get some great deals on antiques on eBay also. And for sure you can get an idea of what an item is worth.
