Live Auctioneers

Live auctioneers use words and phrases to generate sales, add excitement and make auctions fun. Fast speaking, nonsense words and regional accents and twangs add color and flare to the experience. Many auctioneers develop a personal style that becomes their ‘trademark.’

The Auctioneer

The most important person at a live auction is the auctioneer. While there are support persons to help manage items, without a professional auctioneer there would not be an auction. Live auctioneers are more than fast-speaking sellers of goods. They are responsible for public relations, occasionally take on janitorial duties, and are business managers. The best auctioneers have good people skills and are aware of the value of the types of items they sell.

Auctioneer Schools

There are many ways to learn how to become an auctioneer. Some colleges offer semester-long courses on business management, accounting and marketing in addition to teaching you to create a signature auctioneer song. Other options include apprenticing, attending an auctioneer school like the World Wide College of Auctioneering, or learning from a professional auctioneer. A high school diploma or GED is required before taking educational courses on auctioneering. The cost and time requirements for a person interested in one of the auctioneer schools vary. Free information is available online.

American Auctioneers

American auctioneers specialize in selling goods and products such as livestock, farm equipment, business materials, real estate and undeveloped land inside the United States. The National Association of Auctioneers and the National Auctioneers Association provide support, educational resources and licensing assistance to their members. They also provide the names of local auctioneers to persons interested in hiring an auctioneer. Local chapters can be found in every state and have online presences.

Auctioneer Jobs

While some businesses are struggling, many general and specialized auctioneer jobs are available. Attending an auctioneer school, locating auctioneer supplies such as a gavel and passing the licensure test is all that is required. Becoming a member of a local or national auctioneer association or group will help generate interest, provide networking and assist in locating auction work. The successful auctioneer has a style and method that is polished and known to the public. Offering free auctioneer services is one way to advertise. Offering to host a charity auction will also introduce the new auctioneer to potential clients.

Auctioneers and Values

Live auctioneers must know their market. Farm auctioneers are capable of determining the value of equipment, livestock and agricultural supplies. Real estate auctioneers may also be realtors capable of in-depth property evaluations. Antique auctioneers may specialize in a certain period or type of antique, raising sales margins. Skilled auctioneers with the ability to deliver a polished auctioneer song will improve profits at any auction. An auctioneer knows how to encourage bidding resulting in a higher final bid. A good auctioneer can often increase the final sale price by utilizing the best auctioneer skills.

Live auctioneers know that no two auctions will be the same. Developing a unique style and finding a niche’ may provide a lifetime of exciting and profitable employment.
