Government Surplus Auctions

Government surplus auctions offer people the chance to bid on items that are hard to find on other online or public auctions. Heavy machinery, construction vehicles, outdated military, law enforcement equipment and vehicles are just a few of the many surplus items local, state and federal government agencies put up for auction.

Bidding

Before making a bid on government auction sites, you must complete a registration form. For most people filling out the required registration form is easy. Most require only a member name and a password. If the bidder is planning to purchase items for a business, additional information may be required. Civilians who wish to purchase military vehicles must submit form SF97 before bidding on these types of items. Once the registration form has been accepted, bidding for government auction items can begin.

Surplus Auction Categories

Government surplus auctions offer many item categories. Vehicles, firefighting equipment, transportation trucks, storage units, laboratory equipment, medical equipment, and personal property are common category listings found on almost all government auction sites. Local government items will include items seized from criminals including jewelry and artwork. Sporting equipment, recreational items and clothing are other items found on local, county and state government auction sites.

Unique Items

Along with the common auction categories, government surplus categories include sail oats and other types of marine equipment, laboratory and medical equipment. Centrifuges, laboratory refrigerators, biological incubators, radiation detectors, and items removed from NASA shuttles are among the unique items listed in such auctions. Plumbing equipment, garbage, hazardous waste and public utility equipment are among the odd items available for purchase.

Pick-up and Transportation

At a public auction, winning bidders are responsible for removing the items that day. Online auction bidders are responsible in most cases for all shipping and delivery costs. Most government surplus auctions require bidders to remove their items personally. There are some restrictions regarding pick-up for some items. Purchased military vehicles still on government property require an approved SF97 form, picture identification and proof of citizenship before a winning bidder may enter the area and remove their property. Pick-up, transportation and delivery for online government surplus items can be made through a reputable shipping and delivery company. Additional fees may be required for storing the item until pick-up is made. Check all transportation requirements prior to bidding. Some sites charge additional fees or a daily storage fee for items not picked up by the date specified.

Payments

Like many online auction sites most government surplus auctions accept credit card payments. Many sites also accept PayPal payments. Some government-run surplus auction sites will allow businesses to set up accounts where funds can be deducted from their business bank account. A few surplus auction sites require that credit card information be submitted at the time of registration.

Government surplus auctions offer items that may be hard to find at any other auctions. By offering outdated, surplus equipment and items to the public, government agencies can keep replacement costs low while providing quality goods to the public.
